But We Don't Have That!

Tonight I took D with me to the grocery store.  I only needed a few items and she does love going with me.  It was going well and I was following my list with only a few detours (red peppers were $0.99 each!!)  D was being a super helper and was looking for the items that I told her we were looking for.  Then it started...

First time...we were in the snack food aisle.  We were looking for some snacks for D to take to school.  She started pulling boxes off of the shelves and saying, "We don't have this at home.  Can we have this?"  I said no numerous times.  At this point, she would put it back on the shelf and we would continue walking.

Then we hit the cereal aisle looking for Cheerios for Little L.  D saw a fun looking cereal and said, "We don't have this at home.  Can we have it?"  I said no and explained that she already had Shabbat cereal and we could get more when it was all gone.  (Shabbat cereal is sugary cereal that she is allowed to have only on Shabbat.)

The last attempt was next to the milk.  They had a table with donuts, ho hos, and cupcakes.  As I was looking at the milk ($2.29 a gallon!!!!) and talking to husband to see if he can go somewhere else and get it cheaper, she made one last effort to get something she wanted.  D picked up the powdered donuts and said, "We don't have these.  Can I have them?"  Then I said, "You are right, we don't have those.  We are not getting them today."  D looked at the package of donuts and then looked at me.  Then she pushed them over the edge of the cart and dropped them inside.  Then she said (with a straight face none the less), "It is too late."  Then she listened as I relayed this all to husband.  Husband laughed out loud and asked what I was going to do.

We left the store without the donuts, but I do give my 3.5 year old credit for trying.  Next time she will have to do it when I am not looking.  :)
