But We Don't Have That!

Tonight I took D with me to the grocery store.  I only needed a few items and she does love going with me.  It was going well and I was following my list with only a few detours (red peppers were $0.99 each!!)  D was being a super helper and was looking for the items that I told her we were looking for.  Then it started...

First time...we were in the snack food aisle.  We were looking for some snacks for D to take to school.  She started pulling boxes off of the shelves and saying, "We don't have this at home.  Can we have this?"  I said no numerous times.  At this point, she would put it back on the shelf and we would continue walking.

Then we hit the cereal aisle looking for Cheerios for Little L.  D saw a fun looking cereal and said, "We don't have this at home.  Can we have it?"  I said no and explained that she already had Shabbat cereal and we could get more when it was all gone.  (Shabbat cereal is sugary cereal that she is allowed to have only on Shabbat.)

The last attempt was next to the milk.  They had a table with donuts, ho hos, and cupcakes.  As I was looking at the milk ($2.29 a gallon!!!!) and talking to husband to see if he can go somewhere else and get it cheaper, she made one last effort to get something she wanted.  D picked up the powdered donuts and said, "We don't have these.  Can I have them?"  Then I said, "You are right, we don't have those.  We are not getting them today."  D looked at the package of donuts and then looked at me.  Then she pushed them over the edge of the cart and dropped them inside.  Then she said (with a straight face none the less), "It is too late."  Then she listened as I relayed this all to husband.  Husband laughed out loud and asked what I was going to do.

We left the store without the donuts, but I do give my 3.5 year old credit for trying.  Next time she will have to do it when I am not looking.  :)

It never fails...

What a busy week it has been.  It was the first week in about three weeks that we worked all week long.  Because of that, it felt so long!!!  I realized that there were numerous classes that I had not seen for three weeks due to snow days and ITBS testing.

When the weekend finally rolled around, we spent some great quality time as a family.  We took the girls to the playground around the block.  D rode her bike there, while Little L rode in the stroller.  Everyone went on the slides and swings.  We ran around, climbed the playground, and had a great time.  The weather has been amazing here and we wanted to get as much outside time as possible.

Then, out of nowhere, our perfect weekend takes a turn for the worse.  Little L started running a fever on Saturday night.  We don't know why, and she isn't complaining about her ears or acting sick.  The problems come when it is time to go to sleep and she cannot sleep through the night.  She tosses and turns and wakes up screaming.

Saturday night, husband and I took turns interacting with her.  We held her, fed her, walked with her, etc.  The amount of sleep deprivation is starting to kick in for both husband and I.  Little L and D took conflicting naps, so we didn't even get a time to nap.  Since she is sick, we have been cleaning her bedding and her room.  When she is awake, after she plays, she just wants to be held.  That is hard since she changes her mind on who she wants to hold her.

She is feeling better now, and is down, for the night hopefully.  Wish us all a good night's sleep.

It's the Little Things

Every once in a while, I stop and just soak things in.  With working full time, being a wife, and a mother, it is hard to remember to stop and smell the roses.  Today, I taught a lesson on the Death and Dying to a group of 8th and 9th graders.  The lesson went remarkably well and several students started reminiscing about their loved ones.

I came home with a slight headache to be told that a friend of husband was on his way over.  I thought instantly to the mess in the house, the need to do laundry, the girls who would want all of my attention because I had been gone all day, etc.  This particular friend lost his wife recently.  He is now a single father to a 17 year old boy and needs these visits to stay sane and deal with life.  I was in no way upset that this friend was coming over.  Rather, I just wasn't prepared for a guest.

As I walked in the door, I realized what an amazing husband I am married to.  The laundry was on it's third load, the dishwasher was emptied and refilled, the floors had been swept, and the kids were doing great.  What an amazing gift!!!

Then, the little things started piling up.  Little L has been drinking out of a straw.  Tonight at dinner, she held the sippy cup in one hand and ate with the other hand.  It was precious.  During bath time, the girls took a bath together for the first time.  So grown to bathe together for the first time.  Husband and I stood back and just watched the two of them splashing and playing together.

Finally, we took a family walk around the neighborhood.  This time we took the dog with us.  Little L rode the entire time watching her big sister D walk the dog.  At times, the dog walked D, but D felt so grown up to be able to hold the leash and walk the dog.  You heard her telling the dog to "come on" and "stop".  There were times where she was running trying to keep the dog nearby and I had to grab the leash once when another dog came out to greet us.

All in all, it was a great day with moments where I did stop and just watch the girls doing what they do best.  Just being themselves.

Just the Way It Goes

I have never wanted to go to work as badly as I have this week.  Nothing exciting is going on at school (other than school-wide testing). There are no exceptionally amazing lessons that I am teaching this week (Of course ALL of my lessons are amazing).  I want to go to work because I am SICK and TIRED of being stuck in the house.  In the last two weeks, we have missed 5 days of school due to snow and ice.  We live in Texas, so it is mainly ice.

My creative juices stopped flowing days ago on how to entertain my children.  We played with play dough, we colored, we baked, we built with legos, we made snow ice cream, we chased each other in the snow, we read books, we played dress up, we played D in a box (we were running out of ideas at this point), and we played with every toy in D's closet.

Because of the major change in routine, the girls' sleep schedule was completely out of whack.  Plus, at some point or another, each and every one of us got sick.  I felt like we were constantly tumbling all over each other and that probably didn't help the germs.  Getting back to work was getting back to sanity.

Little L is still messed up with the sleeping.  It isn't as if she has her days and nights mixed up.  It is more like she isn't really sleeping during either daytime or night time.  Last night, we (and by we I mean husband) were up with her from midnight to 3:30ish.  Her eyes were closed the entire time, but she was fussy and tossing and wouldn't let him put her down.

It is currently 2:03 AM according to my cable box and I have just put her back into her crib again after being up with her since 1.  At least it is getting shorter.

Ice/Snow Week

You might think that staying at home instead of working would have given me more time to blog, but apparently, that is not the case.  The week started off with Little L running a fever on Monday night.  I was thrilled that we had Tuesday off because neither husband or I had to take a day off of work.  Little L had a runny nose, fever, and was barely eating.  My little linebacker can put the food away, so when she doesn't eat, we worry!!!

So, on Tuesday, we took care of a sick baby and D played and played and played with all of her toys.  She was so excited to stay in her PJ's all day!  We built with Legos, we played with babies, we dressed and undressed Mr (and Mrs) Potato Head, we put together a puzzle, we played trains, and we colored.  We did not go outside because the layer of ice on the roads made them dangerous.

Wednesday came along and the novelty of an extra day off was still there.  I washed almost every piece of clothing in our house, we cleaned the kitchen, we tidied up, we rearranged some cabinets, and played with the girls.  I was starting to get a little tired of being inside, but was trying to keep it together for the girls!

On Thursday, I couldn't take it any more!!!  I had to get out of the house for the safety and sanity of my family.  We piled into the minivan and drove a fast 22 mph to Target.  The parking lot was scary with all of the ice so we stayed inside longer than normal just to stay out of the house.  It was wonderful and perfect timing.  On Friday it snowed again!!!

This time, I took D out for a little while.  We made snow angels, chased each other, attempted to throw snowballs (but the snow wouldn't pack), and collected snow for snow ice cream.  Then, we baked all day.  We made Challah and cookies and snow ice cream!!!  I loved spending the quality time with my oldest daughter and she loved helping.

Then, as the weekend approached, my husband and I both got sick.  Husband got sick first (and hardest).  We took it really easy over the weekend and are trying to take it easy again today.  Hopefully the new week will bring us renewed health.

I hope your snowy adventures were as fun as ours!!
